Twin massed 2-storey detached house on a steep, south-facing countryside hill. A log sauna and timber-clad guest cottage are situated behind the house. The house is timber framed with cellulose wool insulation, clad in larch.

The main idea of the design

We began to design a wooden house that would give a slight barn-like atmosphere or spirit of a fishing lodge. A traditional ceiling angle was chosen for the house, which is harmonious with the rural area. The family wanted to preserve the surrounding milieu as much as possible, therefore we placed the house on the steep slope, so that the nature could continue all around it, untouched. Bilberries and mushrooms grow right to the edge of the house. Also a view through the house to the gulf was important to succeed in the plan.

The arrangement of the house was considerd so that spaces could be found to be together, but also to be separate if necessary. The family wanted the opportunity to have privacy without being isolated, if, for example, the children were playing with friends whilst the parents were working from home. The family’s previous home was a loft apartment, and the growing children also thought that the idea of their own spaces seemed appealing. The childrens’ bedrooms are situated on the same level as the entrance, and the kitchen, living room and dining area. For the parents’ spaces, stairs climb to the study from the leading corridor. The loft has a large hallway functioning as the dressing room, the master bedroom and the parents’ bathroom.
