Housing: POOK Architects have been chosen for the e-House’s new type of housing area, based on ‘group building’. The first project is located in Appikylä, Helsinki, consiting of ten houses. The owners can choose the layout and materials of their choise from a catalogue through an internet portal. The new type of service gives the opportunity for high quality and affordable way to build.

Architecture: The architecture of the buildings is based on a simple pitchroof forms. The design is closely linked to the masterplan of Alppikylä and the overall aims of the townplan that mainly consists of small scale housing. Each of the houses have a private protected and sunny garden that are a continuation from the main living interior spaces. The apartments have been designed with different layouts and material choises that the new owner can choose specific to their needs.

Execution: The buildings have been designed using prefabricated elements. The prefabricated building components are constructed completely in a factory and then assembled on-site. The method enables a good humidity and quolity control despite weather conditions that would be otherwise unsuitable. The prefabricated components are clad with bricks.

Cityscape and architecture

The bridge is a sculptural piece set in the surrounding city. The bridge is also visible from the river and the beach, the bridge takes shape as a peaceful and distinctive original in a series of bridges.  Linnankatu and the Eastern Shore street height drive the bridge and it is considered subordinate to the cityscape. The bridge deck rises slightly below street level and is lined with solid structural crash barriers.

Lighting is integrated into the bridge deck at the inside of about 1.2 meters in height. The underside of the bridge is the major façade to pedestrians and boaters. Therefore the wood surfaces are illuminated from the bottom.

Structure

The bridge has a total span of over 90 meters and a width of 20m. The bridge is divided into two with an intermediate support. Finnish timber can be used for the bridges construction.

The aim of the project was to study, design and visualize netlike wooden structures that could be exploited by the building industry. At the same time a new wooden structure system was being developed. The system would be open and consist of design principles only, rather than fixed dimensions and measures.

A tree like structure based on a repeated sickle-arc system was used to achieve the required span and free heights of the football hall. Particular attention was paid to the continuity of the elements and a simple mount technology was used.

The project created using a modular system of timber structured buildings. The project has a broad functional compatibility and can be extended in all directions an infinite number of times.

The plan is based on a square module and the use of different layouts.
