Housing: POOK Architects have been chosen for the e-House’s new type of housing area, based on ‘group building’. The first project is located in Appikylä, Helsinki, consiting of ten houses. The owners can choose the layout and materials of their choise from a catalogue through an internet portal. The new type of service gives the opportunity for high quality and affordable way to build.

Architecture: The architecture of the buildings is based on a simple pitchroof forms. The design is closely linked to the masterplan of Alppikylä and the overall aims of the townplan that mainly consists of small scale housing. Each of the houses have a private protected and sunny garden that are a continuation from the main living interior spaces. The apartments have been designed with different layouts and material choises that the new owner can choose specific to their needs.

Execution: The buildings have been designed using prefabricated elements. The prefabricated building components are constructed completely in a factory and then assembled on-site. The method enables a good humidity and quolity control despite weather conditions that would be otherwise unsuitable. The prefabricated components are clad with bricks.

Site: The site is located at the heart of Porvoo’s valuable seaside milieu. The design cosists of a group of holidayhouses with a multiuse mainbuilding.

Architecture: The seaside view is shaped by the trees and rocks of the beach that surround the pitchroof buildingshapes. The building materials and colours are influenced by the soilid, grey rock, surraouding forest and the local traditional Porvoo seaside building colours. The timber cladding continues to the roof and interior spaces, enhancing the architecture that it otherwise modest and fragmented. The buildings are connected and seperated by greenroofed buildingunits, that are roofed with vegitation and growing medium. The thin sturctures have uniform high pitched roofs; facing to the sea, the pitches create a holistic deisgn within the landscape.

Energy and ecology: The building materials mainly consist of Finnish timber. The walls are well thermally insulated utilising the wood’s hygroscopic properties. On top of the thermal insulation, the smart solutions and control of the building services are intergral within the design. The design principles use the passivehouse standards as a norm, incorporating active and passive solar energy.

Mangansala peninsula is situated in the Daugava mouth of Baltic sea in Riga, Latvia.

The main attraction of the peninsula is its exceptional nature and different types of water and coast:

1. BALTIC SEA

Beach and dunes – in the future the dune area is preserved as it is, recreational use of the area is enhanced.

2. RIVER DAUGAVA

Heavily treated port and industrial area – in the future the riverbank can be designed as a public marina with boulevard and recreational facilities. There can be exclusive riverside housing of up to 5 levels.

3. VECDAUGAVA

Natura 2000 protection area with many species of bird and reed – in the future there can be a nature path and a small motor boat marina for the new Mangansala housing area.

4. NEW CANALS

People are offered contact to the water just next to the houses. Residents have the possibility of keeping their private boats next to their apartment.

It is very important to offer public accessibility to all these water areas and possibility to walk around the peninsula.

An adaptable and flexible home for a family of six. The solution has been to combine the kitchen, dining and living areas allowing them to expand and mutate in relation to the user’s needs. Thanks to the narrow frame walls the dwellings have been designed as light and portable. The number of residential rooms can be changed and resized.

Car parking and access is at street level below the floor level. Residence, kitchen and living rooms are located at a higher level and are linked to the calm courtyard and park.

The house can be changed into a variety of arrangements to allow for varying degrees of privacy.

The lower layer is the so-called mixed layer with a living room, and living spaces to serve. This layer can function as AuPair-spaces, and later when the children become independent as it has its own entrance thus expanding the life cycle of the dwelling.

Sustainable development and energy

The building materials are durable and require very little maintenance. This leads to reduced running costs. The exterior walls and roof are well insulated and building is equipped with an efficient heat recovery system. The window openings are designed taking into account their ease of use as well as the sun angles and solar energy in order to protect from extraordinary heat loads.

Urban Setting

Volumetric surroundings of the site are uniquely delicate, small, detailed and fractured – and at the same time dominated by few vertical elements. We wanted to respect the small volumetric scale, existing or potential public paths and green areas. Thus creating a small “village” that happens in two levels; creating new accessible public spaces that can provide activities from morning to evening in various temperatures. We wanted to create spaces for spontaneous social contact and fluent life.
